The crash occurred just before 11 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 2 and 55 Avenue near Stavely, south of Calgary. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to the scene following reports of a serious collision involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck.

Tragically, all three occupants of the smaller vehicle — members of the Southern Alberta Mustangs junior hockey team — were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims, aged 17 and 18, were en route to team practice when the collision took place.

The deceased have been identified as two 18-year-old teammates from Kamloops, British Columbia, and a 17-year-old player from the United States, each described as beloved figures in their local communities and on the ice.

The driver of the commercial vehicle, a 40-year-old man from the surrounding area, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, according to RCMP.

Officials with the RCMP’s Claresholm detachment are continuing to investigate the crash. Authorities cautioned that Highway 2 northbound lanes were reduced or temporarily blocked as first responders worked to secure the area and manage traffic flow.

The news has sparked a wave of grief among the wider hockey community across Western Canada and beyond.
